McDonald’s sells more than 75 hamburgers every second: a stunning fact and something that is only possible due to the company’s franchise policy. Over 80 percent of McDonald’s restaurant businesses around the world are owned and operated by franchisees, which means that they are owned and operated by independent local individuals. The franchising system has resulted in a presence in over 122 countries, with 33,000 different McDonalds serving 51 million customers a day. Entrepreneur Magazine ranked McDonalds the number one franchise to own in the United States for both 2008 and 2009.
