Kipp loves a good success story, and there are few to match that of Sol Kerzner. From humble beginnings in South Africa he has risen to become one of the most prominent characters in the global hotel industry, and he has just been invested with the insignia of Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) by England’s Queen Elizabeth II. It was recognition for his outstanding and exemplary contribution in the area of business and community in the Bahamas.
Kerzner was born in South Africa to a family that ran a hotel chain. After graduating as a Chartered Accountant he took over the family business and turned it into the most successful hotel group in South Africa. He was responsible for South Africa’s first five star hotel, as well as Africa’s famous Sun City resort. His ambitions lay beyond Africa, however, and he went on to develop the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas (and of course its sister hotel in Dubai), as well as numerous other luxurious hotels worldwide.
