World’s first All-Women City
Saudi Arabia is planning on building world’s first women-only city in Al Hofuf. The city will help women lead a financially-independent life and provide them with employment opportunities, creating 5,000 jobs in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, food-processing and textile industry, which makes sense considering the fact that about 78 percent of university graduates of the fairer sex in the country are unemployed. The all-women city is slated to be constructed by Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) in 2013. The city will be “consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations.” More recently, Saudi women were allowed to work in cosmetic and ladies apparels and lingerie shops, replacing local men. It was also reported that Saudi women have been permitted to participate and cast their votes in the 2015 local elections, and more recently two female athletes were allowed to participate for the first time in this year’s Olympics Games in London.
