Nigel Northridge
Described by the Times as “a very safe pair of hands,” Nigel Northridge became chairman of Debenhams in April last year. The paper says that he “has been on the plc boardroom circuit for more than a decade despite being a relatively youthful 54.”
During that stint Northridge has served on the boards of Aggreko, Paddy Power, Thomas Cook, and Inchcape. Northridge, from Belfast, studied business at Northern Ireland Polytechnic. He joined Gallaher, Britain’s second biggest cigarette manufacturer aged 19 to earn some cash and worked his way up from salesman. Aged just 41 he joined the board, and within three years was chief exec for a hugely successful seven years.
His last year with the company, which was taken over in 2005, gave him time to rub shoulders with non-exec director…
