Queen Noor Al Hussein
Born as Lisa N. Halaby of Syrian, British and Swedish descent, on August 23, 1951 in Washington, D.C., she spent most of her childhood in the USA. She received a B.A. in architecture and urban planning From Princeton University in 1974. She became known as Queen Noor Al Hussein following her marriage to King Hussein of Jordan, who she met during her career as Arabair Services’ Director of facilities Planning and Design. She was told to renounce her American citizenship and accept Islam, in order to marry the King. She is the last wife and widow of King Hussein and has three stepchildren (King Hussein’s children from previous marriages.) In her capacity as a Queen, she has addressed many current global issues in the area of education, environmental conservation and development, human rights, international organizations, conferences, and academic institutions. She is also the current president of the United World Colleges movement and a strong voice of anti-nuclear weapons proliferation campaign, Global Zero.
