Richard Branson’s story starts with him being a high-school dropout. Today he is a hugely successful entrepreneur, making oodles of $$$. His philosophy in life – “oh, screw it, let’s do it.” – says it all. Branson chose to name his company Virgin because he and his friends believed they were complete virgins when it came to setting up a business. His association with the Middle East takes us back to 2006 when he ceremoniously planted the Union Jack on the Great Britain island at Dubai’s ’The World’ project to celebrate the debut of Virgin Atlantic airway’s direct flights between the UK and Dubai.
Space tourism is one of his latest business ventures. His commercial spaceship, Virgin Galactic (part owned by Abu Dhabi’s Aabar Investments) is said to send passengers into space in sub-orbital ships. This expensive affair involves super-rich celebrities and businessmen, such as Sigourney Weaver, William Shatner, Stephen Hawkings and Rubens Barrichello, to name just a few.
