Diego Armando Maradona was born in Argentina but raised in Buenos Aires. He is best remembered for the most infamous goal in World Cup history. For those of you, who surprisingly don’t know the ‘Hand of God’ incident, here’s a low down: It was during the quarter final of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico between Argentina and England. The score was locked at nil-nil six minutes into the second half. Maradona netted the first goal by hitting the ball with his fist into the back of the net—only from the referee’s angle, it could have been his head touching the ball. The referee counted the goal. It took 22 years for Maradona to apologise for what he described at the time as “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.”
The latest chapter in his epic story sees him move to Abu Dhabi to coach the Al Wasl Club for an undisclosed sum of money. Rumours about this figure runs between $10 million to $34.5 million annually—if true, this makes Maradona the second highest paid coach in the world next to Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho.
Kipp figures this amount is just about right if Club Chair Marwan Bin Bayat is taking on Maradona more for his star power and media magnetism more than his coaching skills.
