The Six Degrees of…George Clooney

Abdulhamid Juma, who has become a topic of Kipp’s Six Degrees, before, is one of the pioneers of the Dubai International Film Festival when it was founded in 2004. He took on the role of chairman in 2006. He has since then cultivated the arts and entertainment culture of the UAE and has expanded his remit to include the Gulf Film Festival which showcases regional cinema to a local and global audience. Juma also sits on the board of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and often counsels cultural projects in Dubai. He has been given the ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’ award for his contribution to the field of arts and culture. Awarded on February 2012, the honour recognises Juma’s contributions towards the promotion of cinema in the Gulf, and particularly in this case, French cinema.

    The crisis about which Clooney et al have been protesting is in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, not South Sudan, which became independent last July. The problem is that the Nuba have been left in the hands of northern Sudan, whose government has already committed genocide in Darfur.
