Azerbaijan’s first lady, Mehriban Aliyeva, welcomed French minister of culture and communication Frederic Mitterrand at a photo exhibition reflecting Azerbaijan’s national leader Heydar Aliyev’s life and career.

Ties between France and Azerbaijan are getting stronger, with the first lady having visited France last year and the ‘Fly to Baku’ exhibition running in Paris this April.

But life is not all peachy for the wife of Ilham Aliyev, the incumbent president of Azerbaijan. The first lady was in the spotlight in 2010 when WikiLeaks obtained US diplomat dispatches that had less than glowing comments about the 47-year-old UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. These included a dig at her limited facial expressions due to ‘substantial cosmetic surgery’ as well as a stab at her family, the Pashayevs, as controlling most of the country’s big businesses.

    The crisis about which Clooney et al have been protesting is in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, not South Sudan, which became independent last July. The problem is that the Nuba have been left in the hands of northern Sudan, whose government has already committed genocide in Darfur.
