The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is encouraging local businesses in the UAE to make the switch to .ae – the national top-level domain name.
By releasing data that outlines the market share of registrants in the country, the TRA is accelerating its efforts to promote the benefits for businesses to adopt the national domain name. In September 2012, the number of registrations in the UAE surpassed 100,000.
The Registrars Market Share July 2013 report reveals that Etisalat has the largest market share (72.21 per cent), among the 16 registration providers assessed. It is followed by Instra Corporation Pty Ltd (8.94 per cent) and 101Domain Inc (3.31 per cent), reports WAM, the UAE’s local news agency.
Mohammad Al Zarooni, acting executive director of policies and program in the TRA, says the dotcom space is currently saturated and by using the national domain of the UAE, one of the benefits is that businesses “will be afforded a larger choice of potential names for their website”.
He adds: “With more businesses registering with the .ae domain name, the UAE is creating a stronger presence online. The TRA has deliberately streamlined the .ae registration process, making it easier for businesses to register and I encourage all those who haven’t created a localised domain name to do so right away, as it truly represents their UAE identity on the internet.”
