According to the Public Transport Agency, public buses operating over 85 routes managed to commute more than 94 million passengers in 2008. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) purchased 620 buses including 170 double-deckers, 300 articulated buses and 150 standard buses, at a cost of AED 1 billion last year. It is planning to increase the number of buses to 2,500 by 2010.
The RTA is also building 1,000 air-conditioned bus shelters with vending machines and rubbish recycle bins in Dubai, and it is planning three new bus depots with dedicated platforms for departures and arrivals, commercial outlets, restaurants and offices.
