Brand to Brand: Vacation Vs Staycation

To vacate or staycate-that is the question for those tight on cash. While the answer may seem obvious, when you weigh out all the options it isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

Travel

Vacation

Buying an airticket are you? Got a limb and half to spare, do you? Even if you choose to fly budget, chances are you are going to end up paying at least Dh1.5K—let us not forget that as it is summer time and there are about 5 million other expats in the UAE who have the same bright idea as you do. And even if you do manage to score a relatively affordable ticket- chances are you will end up with your knees in your chest next to a screaming baby and his flatulent father through the entire flight.

Staycation

It is primarily the price of an air ticket that makes people go the staycation way. And if you are staycationing out of the city, you will need to spring for petrol—which is indeed becoming a more sacred commodity in these devoid times, but still is a whole lot cheaper than an air ticket.

Vacation

This is a broad category: but if you live in the UAE pretty much anything OTHER than the UAE would be a welcomed and refreshing change. Whether we are talking about the theme parks of the US, the wines of Europe or the greenery of India-the whole point of a break is to have a change of scenery. Vacation wins over this one hands down.

Staycation

Burj Khalifa, Wild Wadi, Ferrari World, desert safari, Burj Al Arab, Atlantis. What is that? You have already done that? Yes, that is what we thought. Besides, veteran UAE residents will also probably use the imminent appearance of Modhesh just as an excuse to jump borders.

Hotels

Vacation

Does 'they searched from inn to inn" even begin to describe what looking for accommodation when planning your summer vacation is like? Speaking from personal experience, as someone who secured accommodation only 12 hours before our flight, finding the right hotel which is not only affordable, comfortable and centrally located let alone available is next to impossible.

Staycation

You can staycate from the comfort of your own home: that means no running to the nearest (read farthest) grocery store to buy the most random everyday item like safety pins. Then again, if you want to staycate at a hotel, chances are you will find ample space in the UAE's more than modest hotels. And given the scorching summer months, you're bound to snatch a good summer-offer at the Atlantis or at one of the many yallabananas-or-whatever-they-are-called voucher websites.

Vacation

Think of all the Facebook updates and tweets that you can post to make everyone so damn jealous of all of the fun you are having. And when you get back, don’t forget to post those photographs, videos, blogs and infographics to really hit the nail in the coffin.

Staycation

Let’s be honest. No one envies a staycationer.

Visa

Vacation

Now if you are the fortunate holder of a passport from North America or Europe, visas shouldn't be too difficult to come by. But, if you belong to the ‘everyone else’ category, well, you'd know that acquiring a visa can be a time-consuming, frustrating and expensive affair, making a staycation all the more appealing.

No visa. No worry.

Sure it’s great to get away, but when it comes down to affordability, practicality and ease a staycation just seems like a better idea!
