In 2001, Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, “for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world”.
The Ghanaian diplomat served as the UN’s seventh Secretary-General, and held two five-year terms. He was the first person from a black African nation to serve the post. During his tenure, he saw the HIV/AIDS endemic as a personal priority and proposed the establishment of a Global AIDS and Health Fund.
After leaving the UN, Annan joined the Global Elders Community, an international group of 12 elder public figures.
In a recent visit to the UK, while meeting the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Annan was reportedly asking about Britain’s latest sensation…
