Barack Hussein Obama II is the Junior Senator of Illinois and the Democrat incumbent for the United States 2008 presidential election. The 47-year old candidate is the first African-American to be nominated by a major political party for such a position.
Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004 and was elected to the Senate in November 2004 with 70 percent of the vote. In February 2007, he announced his candidacy for President of the United States, and was nominated by the Democratic Party against Hillary Clinton. Throughout his campaign, he broke fundraising records repeatedly, setting his top three priorities as rapidly ending the Iraq War, increasing energy independence, and providing universal health care. Last spring, his relationship with pastor Jeremiah Wright, whose sermons are perceived as anti-American, ignited controversy in the United States.
