Calling all Emirati historians


There’s so much history in the UAE, but who’s writing about it?

I read an article in The National today about an Emirati and his relationship with the sea. Frankly, it takes an editorial nudge or two to remind me that the Emirates have a long history, one that’s inextricably tied with the sea. But with all the construction and developments underway, it’s so easy to forget that while the UAE is racing to build a future it’s proud of, it has an extensive history that so few expatriates know about.

That said, getting to know the nation’s history isn’t easy either. There isn’t exactly a plethora of history books written about the UAE, and the few that do exist are written by non-Emiratis.

I wonder if there are any Emirati historians out there writing a book about his or her nation. And if there are, I wonder if his or her book will be published before the end of this 2008, the year of National Identity.
