Egyptian workers protest against low wages

Hundreds gather in Cairo to demand increase in minimum wage, chanting slogans against the government and president.

Outnumbered by police, hundreds of protesters gathered in Cairo Sunday to demand the government address rising unemployment and raise the national minimum wage, which has remained unchanged since 1984.

Protestors blame the Egyptian government’s efforts to privatize factories for rising unemployment and a downward pressure on wages.

Some observers suggest that Egypt’s government is more concerned with attracting foreign investment than addressing worker welfare concerns.
