Apple has announced that the iPhone 4 shifted more than 1.7 million units in its opening three days on sale, reports CNN.

The incredible figures far outstrip any previous launches from the tech giants. Boss Steve Jobs called the opening “the most successful product launch in Apple’s history.” In the same time frame, sales for the 3GS iPhone were around 1 million, and it took the original iPhone 74 days to reach that mark, says the report.

Five days after release, the iPad had reached sales of 450,000.

Apple said it took advance orders for more than 600,000 new iPhones worldwide on the first day, the most ever taken by the company in a single day (10 times higher than for the iPhone 3GS last year).

“The iPhone 4 was rabidly anticipated by Apple fans for new features, including dual cameras that allow video-calling and a higher-resolution display screen,” says CNN. “But some of the luster of the strong opening was stripped last week by reports of spotty reception. Apple acknowledged users’ reports of dropped calls and poor reception when holding the phone by its metal sides – which hold the antenna.”
