Abu Dhabi Airport Posts 21 Percent Passenger Growth in Q1

The airport saw 3.4 million passengers pass through it in the first three months of this year, a statement from the operating company said.

Abu Dhabi International Airport said on Saturday passenger traffic grew 21 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the same period a year ago, as the Gulf emirate pushes ahead with its expansion in tourism and industry.

The airport saw 3.4 million passengers pass through it in the first three months of this year, a statement from the operating company said.

“The double digit growth in number of passengers reflects the level of attraction the emirate holds as a business and tourism destination,” said Harib al Hameli, vice president of operations at Abu Dhabi Airports Company, in the statement.

The Far East ranked as the top region generating 39 percent of airport traffic, followed by the Middle East with 25 percent and Europe with 22 percent, the statement said.

Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates is investing billions of dollars in industry, tourism and infrastructure as it diversifies its economy away from oil.
