A new trailer for the film Sex and the City 2 shows scenes set in what is supposed to be Abu Dhabi – although the film was actually shot in Morocco. You can view the trailer here.

In the preview, Samantha – played by Kim Cattrall – exclaims “I can hear the decadence calling” when told about an “all expenses paid” holiday to the UAE capital. The film depicts the female central characters drinking champagne, partying, and apparently falling in love during their stay in Abu Dhabi.

The movie was shot in Morocco after filmmakers were reportedly denied permission by UAE authorities to film in Dubai, citing sensitivity to the “multicultural fabric of the society and its perceptions”.

The film, based on the popular HBO television series and starring Sarah Jessica Parker, is scheduled for release on 28 May 2010.

Uh, yeah, because Morocco looks so much like Abu Dhabi…

Why the hell didn’t the producers take a stand and tell Abu Dhabi where to go when they were denied permission to film here? Another farce awaits whereby Abu Dhabi will happily accept any publicity garnered by the film and the ensuing (although most likely ultimately disappointed) tourists but will probably not screen the film here…

Abu Dhabi is about as decadent as a church tea party.

The true farce is when some people don’t appreciate – or at least try to understand – others cultures. Every society has the right to insinuate its own image. In this case, I think that Abu Dhabi state has the right to sue the producer for fraud. Finally, who cares about a bunch of anti-culture tourists?

A lot of cinema goers, looking at the success of the last one.
