UAE will reportedly construct its first four nuclear plants in Braka, located 75km from the Saudi border, the Gulf News.
Emirates Nuclear Energy Corportation, or Enec, announced Thursday that environmental assessments and licensing applications have been filed, with construction planned for late 2012 and tentative operations commencing in 2017, the report indicated.
The Braka site was selected for its proximity to water and the presence of existing energy infrastructure. The area is reportedly sparsely populated, with a “stable seismic history.”
“The selection of our preferred site is the result of an evaluation process that meets or exceeds international standards,” Gulf News reported, quoting Mohammad Al Hammadi, chief executive officer of Enec.
