Dubai appeals court overturned the conviction of a Pakistani couple sentenced to prison and deportation following their conviction on indecency charges, the BBC said Wednesday.
Accused of having sex inside a parked vehicle, the defense argued that police twice attempted to peer inside the darkened windows of the car, constituting a breach of human rights and a violation of the couples’ privacy.
Additionally, the defense contended that because the car was a private place, the emirate’s indecency laws had not been violated.
Dubai’s strict indecency laws have received much press recently, following a string of arrests in which foreigners have faced charges and convictions.
