The Syrian leader of a prostitute-smuggling ring in the UAE has received a life sentence, the BBC reported Thursday.
An Abu Dhabi court convicted the man of luring Moroccan women to the UAE, promising high paying jobs. Once in the country, the women were forced into prostitution in order to pay back the cost of their travel to the UAE, the BBC said.
Following the escape of one woman last year, local police raided three flats. The ringleader, who fled the scene and reportedly escaped to Syria, was first convicted in absentia, but later captured and retried, the BBC reported.
