Hunt is on for culprits in New York’s failed car bombing

A failed car bombing in New York’s Times Square is the subject of intense investigation, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg saying there was no evidence of an Al Qaeda link, Reuters reported Monday. Surveillance video captured footage of a white man removing his shirt near the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was left running on West 45th Street near Broadway on Saturday night.

The Taliban in Pakistan has reportedly claimed responsibility for the failed attempt, saying it was a revenge act for the killing of two al Qaeda operatives in Iraq last month, but New York’s police commissioner said there was “no evidence” to back the al Qaeda claim, Reuters said.

Busy Times Square is a popular area of Midtown Manhattan for diners, theater patrons, and tourists. Airport security measures are reportedly up on the US East coast following Saturday’s incident, Reuters added.
