Iran to export natural gas to Pakistan by 2014

Iran to complete a pipeline to carry gas from Iran’s South Pars field.

Iran will begin exporting natural gas to Pakistan in 2014, under a formal agreement signed Sunday, the Tehran Times reported.

A multibillion dollar pipeline between Iran and Pakistan is scheduled for completion within the next four years, according to the SHANA News Agency, the report added. Iran’s deputy oil minister was quoted as saying that the agreement would see the exportation of more than 21 million cubic meters of natural gas daily into Pakistan. He added that beginning Monday, Iran would commence construction of the next segment of the pipeline, a 300 kilometer section from Iranshahr to the Pakistani border, through the Iranian port of Chabahar. Iran has completed a 907 kilometer stretch of the so-called ‘peace pipeline,’ thus far, to carry natural gas from Iran’s south Pars field. Pakistan will use the gas for its power sector, the report said.

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and a consortium of domestic companies are reportedly scheduled to sign contracts worth $15 billion today/tomorrow in development projects for six phases of the South Pars gas field, the Tehran Times reported in a related story today, quoting the official news agency, SHANA.
