Iran wants to help Sudan with infrastructure
Iran wants to give economic support to Sudan and help improve infrastructure in the African ally that has been hit hard by an economic crisis, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday during a visit to Khartoum.

Iran is a big supporter of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir who faces indictment from the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes in the Darfur conflict.
Shunned by the West, Sudan, which has lost much of its oil wealth to newly-independent South Sudan, is keen to expand trade ties with Iran. Most Western firms avoid Sudan due to a tough US trade embargo.
“We want to expand ties to Sudan more and more,” Ahmadinejad said after meeting Bashir. “Sudan and Iran will stand together to defend the Islamic entity.”
Bashir reiterated Sudan’s support for Iran’s controversial nuclear programme. Tehran insists the programme is peaceful but Western nations believe it is aimed at building a bomb.
Sudan and Iran have also had strong military ties after signing a cooperation agreement in 2008. (Reporting by Ulf Laessing)
