Kuwait asks for electricity from GCC electrical grid program

Responses from gulf nations have been ‘discouraging,’ sources say.

With record temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius, Kuwait is experiencing high electricity consumption that has reportedly reached production capacity, prompting the gulf state to request assistance through the GCC electrical grid program, the Kuwait Times reported Wednesday.

Kuwait’s ministry of electricity and water reportedly asked for 1,000 megawatts to be used as “backup,” but received a “discouraging” response from its neighbors, with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain experiencing rising daily energy needs, according to unnamed sources quoted by the paper.

Qatar was named by the sources as the only GCC state with a power surplus, but the nation has not promised to provide additional power for Kuwait.

Kuwait’s National Assembly will convene an emergency session Sunday to discuss the crisis, with some MP’s suggesting the government will be held to account for the lack of sufficient power, which has resulted in recent electricity outages in residential areas.
