The Polish president and his wife were among 132 passengers killed in a plane crash on Saturday morning.
President Lech Kaczynski and his wife were on board a flight which crashed at 10.56 Moscow time near Smolensk airport in Russia, according to local officials.
Local media reports that all 132 passengers were killed.
Smolensk governor Sergei Anufriev told the state news channel Rossiya-24 that there no survivors. “As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president’s aircraft did not make it to the landing strip,” he said. “According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.”
The Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed that Kaczynski and his wife were on board the Tu-154 plane, flying from Moscow to Smolensk.
