Only a fifth of the UAE’s richest individuals have felt any significant impact from the global downturn, reports Emirates 24-7.

That’s roughly the proportion of individuals (21 percent) who say their net worth has been “substantially negatively impacted” by global economic woes. The report is quoting results from a survey by Barclays Wealth and Ledbury Research that encompassed 2,000 people across 20 countries.

Globally, 38 percent of respondents report that the downturn had a “negative” or “quite negative” impact on their net worth; in contrast, less than a quarter of respondents from the UAE said the same.

Thank you for posting this article.

I have a couple of queries regarding the above article and would really appreciate it if someone would please respond.
there are some claims made in this article such as the below –

Can you please let me know how Barclays was able to draw the conclusion that only 21% has been affected by the recession?

I’m debating over how such a small portion was affected by the recession. Were they not all connected to the real estate industry in some form or the other and impacted by it’s fall-out?

My final query is whether a sample size of 2000 people from different countries is enough to draw a conclusion on a finding that deals with particularly the UAE?

The unabashed information on our region is much needed. But in addition to that would love to see such news reports like the above presented with full details, presenting the case in totality.

All the best with your future ventures!

its OBVIOUS that the rich will feel the effects of the economic downturn LESS

but 1/5 of the rich? so 4/5 are not significantly affected? EVERYONE is affected SOMEHOW.

and what percentage of the ‘non-rich’ are not significantly affected?

a better article would be to see WHY the 4/5 are not as significantly affected.. what are the reasons/strategies behind it.
