It’s not illegal for taxis in Dubai to continue making multiple passenger drop-offs, as long as the meter is not reset between destinations.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has released a clarifying statement after a newspaper report earlier this week, which claimed that there was a ban preventing passengers (even friends or relatives) from sharing a taxi.

The article stated that the taxi drivers, if found violating this ‘ban’, could be fined AED 2,000 or even have their employment terminated for repeat offences.

A senior official at the RTA, Tariq Al Ghaith, was clearly quoted saying that “multiple drops by taxi drivers are not allowed in Dubai”, implying that this ruling is in place as shared taxis reduce revenue.

A spokesperson for the Dubai Taxi Corporation confirmed the rule as well.

However, in its recently released statement, RTA officials have made it clear that as long as the meter keeps running until the final destination — more than one person can ride together and stop at various destinations.
