Earlier this month, Al Ghurair was welcomed in Cairo by Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, and the two discussed bilateral relations. Al Ghurair said at the time that the UAE had become the largest investor in Egypt, thanks to incentives offered by the Egyptian government.
Al Ghurair reiterated in July last year that though Mashreq bank’s initial offer for a stake in Egypt’s government-controlled Banque du Caire was rejected, and the sale cancelled, the bank was still interested in the deal. He told Emirates Business that his bank still wished to expand in Egypt.
In 2007, Al Ghurair announced plans to open 30 Mashreq branches in Egypt over the next three years.
