Carlos Slim

Though often described as a ‘Mexican oligarch’, the world’s richest man, who is worth a cool $53bn, has Lebanese ancestry. And he hasn’t forgotten it.

Lebanon’s president presented Slim with Lebanon’s honorary gold medal during the billionaire’s recent one-week visit to Lebanon (his first since 1964). Sleiman urged the strengthening of ties between Lebanon and its large emigrant population, while encouraging their financial investment in the country. Slim is reported to have applauded the progress made in reconstructing Lebanon. Later, he attended a dinner event hosted by Sleiman, at which the President honored the billionaire for having “raised Lebanon’s name very high across the world,” according to the Daily Star newspaper. Sleiman, 61, came to power in 2008, and is the former head of the Lebanese armed forces. (Image: Presidenza della Repubblica)
