The construction cost of Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines is 75 percent higher than previous estimates, bringing the current total to AED28 billion, the chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said at a press conference on Sunday.

Mattar al-Tayer said the rise in cost was due to the addition of new stations and facilities.

Original cost estimates for the Red and Green lines were approximately AED16 billion.

Furthermore, al-Tayer confirmed only 10 stations will be ready for the metro’s launch on September 9. The stations are Rashidiya, Terminal 3, Deira City Centre, Al-Riqqa, Union Square, Khalid bin Al-Waleed (Burjuman), Al-Jafiliya, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), Mall of the Emirates and Nakheel Harbour and Tower.

He also announced that the RTA has postponed the completion date for the 22 km Green Line by three months to June 2010.
