Emirati families in Abu Dhabi earn three times more than their expatriate equivalents, claims the Department of Economic Development (DED) based on an emirate-wide study.
The study showed that the average monthly salary of Emirati families in 2008 was AED47,066 compared with AED15,000 for expatriates, reports Gulf News.
Furthermore, the average Emirati household spends AED25,458 per month compared with AED8,900 for expatriates.
The DED’s head researcher Khalid Desouky explained that Emirati families are generally larger, comprising of 10 individuals per family unit, which may explain the discrepancies in household incomes.
Over half of the UAE’s citizens live in Abu Dhabi.

and they don’t need to pay rent, pay lower utility bills etc
I think ‘earn’ is a slightly grandiose term for ‘rent out your free flat from the government to an expat’.
Another sterling example of how ‘WASTA’ is alive and well in the UAE. One rule for ‘us’, another for ‘them’
Please don’t forget that they are living in thier country
Just a correction : I am a local and most western expats get paid more than locals, the only people who get paid less are the arab expats and then the Asia expats. Locals spend more and have bigger family and as Mohamed Wesam said we live in out country, and another correction the goverment doesnt give locals free flats to rent out they give them the land for free and then they take a loan to build it, we do pay rent you sound silly when you say locals dont pay rent. most of the locals I know rent their homes including me.
