Europeans to use Sahara desert for green energy

Twelve companies are meeting in Munich, Germany on Monday to initiate an association to pursue a AED2.02 trillion ($552.1 billion) drive to generate solar and wind power in the Sahara desert for Europe, report The National.

“The project has been on the drawing board for 30 years, and now, for the first time, it has become technically feasible,” said Wolfgang Dehen, the chief executive of Siemens Energy, a unit of Siemens, the German electrical equipment maker and engineering firm.

The association, Desertec Industrial Initiative, may one day supply 15 percent of the continent’s  electricity.

Some of the association’s backers are Deutsche Bank and Munich Re.
