Expatriates hoping to obtain UAE residency visas will have to pass a culture test, the Federal National Council announced on Monday.  Ahmed Shabeeb Al Dhahiri, First Deputy Speaker of the Federal National Council, told Khaleej Times a specialized committee will be created by October 2009 to help educate expatriates on the UAE’s culture and traditions.

“Too many people don’t know anything about our culture – there are many nationalities – and every resident needs to know something about this country,” Al Dhahiri said.

The committee will include individuals from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We would love to know more about the culture, but we would still be expatriates and not citizens.
