Airports around the world stepped up their security after a suspected terrorist tried to blow up a transatlantic flight on Friday, international news agencies reported on Saturday. Many have increased security checks or reinforced measures already in place for the busy Christmas period, authorities said.
A 23-year-old Nigerian man was trying to detonate a white powdery substance, but failed to destroy the plane. The Northwest Airlines flight 253 was headed from Amsterdam to Detroit, and had 278 passengers on board. The suspect, Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, reportedly bought the substance in Yemen. He was arrested on arrival in Detroit.
According to news reports, he is enrolled as an engineering student at the University College London.
US authorities claim the terror suspect has links with Al-Qaeda.
