A project to connect power grids in Saudi, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE is expected to cost $1.6 billion, Yousif Janahi, chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) said on Monday. The UAE will link to the grid in 2011, and the project is anticipated to be completed by 2012, reports Reuters.

The Gulf countries hope that the project will enable them to meet increasing power demand in the region, says the report.
