The Haitian government has ended the search and rescue phase for the survivors of the January 12 earthquake in the country, the UN announced on Saturday. UN spokeswoman Elizabeth Byrs said that at least 132 people have been rescued so far, and that the decision to stop the search was “heartbreaking.”
The last people to be rescued were Marie Carida Roman, an 84-year-old woman, and a 22-year-old man, both of whom were found on Friday.
The Haitian Interior Ministry said on Friday that more than 110,000 people had died, about 200,000 people were injured and more than 600,000 people were left homeless after the earthquake. Officials have estimated that the final death toll could touch 200,000.
