The Iranian government has detrained around 1,000 people in a bid to crackdown on opposition supporters, reports Bloomberg, citing New York-based International Campaign for Human Rights. The opposition staged the largest anti-government protest since June 2009, the human rights group said.
The group also announced its concerned over the well-being of those detained, saying they fear the detainees may be tortured and subjected to harsh conditions in order to confess to crimes they did not commit.
“It may be assumed that many detainees will be subjected to torture followed by ‘show trials’ and convicted of crimes that carry the death penalty in the Islamic Republic,” a spokesman for the group, Aaron Rhodes, said in an e-mailed statement on Tuesday.
