A majority of Iraqis say that economic issues are the biggest problems they face today as opposed to security issues, according to a survey conducted by YouGovSiraj in December 2009. While 21 percent of those surveyed said that unemployment was their main concern, another 15 percent said that it was financial insecurity. Only 16 percent listed security problems as their biggest difficulty.
“Today’s Iraqis are looking to the future, gradually their concerns are less about violence and more about how ‘I am going to provide for myself and my family’,” Stefan Kazsubowski, YouGov’s managing director in Iraq, said in the release. “As security conditions improve, the economy takes centre stage. People want jobs, decent services and the improvements to quality of life that these things provide.”
However, despite the improved security conditions, 44 percent said that the country was taking the ‘right direction’ moving ahead, while 46 percent said that it was taking the ‘wrong direction’.
