Parents gathered in front of a high school in Kuwait to demand the school cancel its music lessons, Gulf News reported, citing a report in Al Watan daily on Monday.

“Music is not part of our tradition and religion and we totally reject it. What will our sons gain from learning this Satanic course? Teachers should instead focus on instilling good values in the hearts of our children,” Saleh Al Khalid, a parent, said.

Another parent, Fares Al Utaibi, added: “There is no benefit in music and it should not be part of our lives.”

Adel Al Damkhi, the head of the Kuwaiti Society of the Constituents of Human Rights, said: “Requiring students to study music and adding music courses to the curriculum with the subsequent impact on their grades is a violation of the parents’ rights in choosing the adequate education for their children and in upholding their culture and beliefs.”

I’m surprised they’ve woken up to this – a simple music class in school; as opposed to Death Metal / Heavy Metal music which is easily available at their Virgin Megastore (at least the last time I visited Marina Mall a couple years ago).

Not that I have anything against metal; but usually CD covers with pentagrams and slaughtered goats and inverted crucifix are a bit out there…as opposed to the music teacher who’s probably teaching contemporary songs / classical musicians etc.

Music is an intricate part of any culture and more so in the Arab culture. Sound and music are proven to stimulate positive brain activity in children and adults alike and has accompnied mankind since creation. Music and coherent sounds exist in nature (birds and animals sing, musical vibrations are heard even in space) and this means music comes from Allah.
Calling music “satanic” is Haram and a gross misinterpretation of Islamic values and teachings. Ignorant bigots should not dictate what is best and what is supposedly right in a country’s education curriculum.

It’s the usual nonsense in the Gulf region. Go and look at, well, any other Muslim country you care to mention and somehow they don’t seem to have a problem with music or non-Muslims drinking or whether or not their women cover their faces. I wonder why?

I wonder what else would the Kuwaiti government give to the people to distract them from theft and violation of human rights. Each day they create some new MESS to keep the people of Kuwait busy thinking how to solve it leaving the vital demands of applying Human Rights behind their back, as if there is no Music broadcast over the official TV & Radio stations …

I’m sure the parents can just have their kids ‘opt out’ of the class instead of requesting a cancellation. That’s just hypocracy. No one ever talks about riba ‘interest’ that is freely flowing in everyone’s life; not even in Saudi.

This is absurd! There is music everywhere, even when the Koran is recited, there is a rythm, so you can actually put notes to it! Where on earth does it say in Islam that music is not allowed? Ignorance!
