The Mena region currently boasts 56 million Arabic internet users, representing only 17 percent of the region’s total population-estimated at 337 million, Vinton Cerf, Google’s vice president, said in a conference on Wednesday. However, Cerf forecast that by 2013, the number of users will increase to 82 million, a 46.4 percent rise.
“There is an onus on all of us as individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses and governments, to innovate and increase the availability of Arabic content online,” he said. “By doing so we can positively influence the region’s ongoing social and economic development.”
