The UAE government announced all federal and government departments will not be closed on Thursday, December 17, to commemorate the Islamic New Year, which falls on Friday. The public sector will return to work on Sunday following the weekend.
The decision is in line with Cabinet Decision No. 17 of 2009, which claims that public holidays that fall on weekends or coincide with other holidays will not be postponed to a later date, according to a circular issued by Humaid Mohammad Al Qutami, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Federal Human Resources Authority.

Let’s hope there is consistency in this decision from now on. The Eid-al-Adha holidays for the govt. sector late last month was quite contrary to this decision.
