The Pakistani army killed over 600 armed men suspected to be part of the Taliban in South Waziristan, reports Bloomberg, citing a military spokesman. The army began its offensive six weeks ago, and has since lost 70 soldiers.
The announcement comes a day after Pakistan rejected British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s statements that the nation needs to do more to fight al-Qaeda.
“We’ve got to ask ourselves why, eight years after September 11th, nobody has been able to spot or detain or get close to Osama bin Laden,” Brown told the BBC. “We have got to ask the Pakistani security forces, army and politicians to join us in the major effort that the world is committing resources to, not only to isolate al-Qaeda, but to break them in Pakistan.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that no one should doubt his nation’s sincerity in the struggle to eradicate terrorism, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

I think the real question here is why the United States has yet to nail Osama. We can’t blame Pakistan for our ineptness.
