Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah have spent over $120 million to develop the infrastructure for the America Cup sailing competition which is due to be held in the emirate in February 2010. As part of the preparation, RAK is also developing a 5 million square meter luxury resort island around the marina.
The information was released by RAK authorities in a court brief in New York. RAK filed the brief in response to a motion filed against it by the Golden Gate Yacht Club, which alleged that the emirate lacks necessary infrastructure for holding the event and cannot guarantee the safety of the crew.

Cannot help thinking that 120 million dollars could have been MUCH better spent. Have RAK got that sort money to throw away on an elitist sport that very few people follow and even fewer actually take part in?
