Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sacked First Vice-President Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie after the nation’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei said it was “necessary” to do so, reports the BBC.
In a letter broadcast on Iranian state TV, Ayatollah Khamenei said that Mashaie’s appointment was “against [Ahmadinejad's] interest and the interests of the government,” and that “it is necessary to announce the cancellation of this appointment.”
Mashaie made headlines last year when he said Iranians and Israelis were friends.
