Sultan Bin Sulayem is one of the three main advisors to the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Mohammed and Sulayem “go back a long way.”
Following Sulayem’s graduation from Temple University in Philadelphia, he returned to Dubai and worked as a customs official.
Soon after his return, Sheikh Mohammed asked Sulayem what he thought about the concept of a free trade zone, “an area when foreign companies could establish themselves and trade with lucrative tax breaks.” Sulayem believed it to be “a good idea.” Consequently, Sheikh Mohammed made him the head of Jebel Ali Free Zone, home to 6,000 companies.
