The US special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, told Syrian President Bashar Assad the US requires his complete cooperation in achieving peace in the region, reports the BBC.
Mitchell said Syria is crucial in this “historic endeavor.”
He also said restarting peace talks between Syria and its Jewish neighbor, Israel, is a “near-term goal.”
Mitchell was in the Middle East this week to “re-engage” Syria after the Bush administration allegedly alienated the Middle Eastern nation.
