A special 25% discount offer to mark the operation’s 29th Anniversary resulted in a spending spree at Dubai International Airport that began at midnight on 19th December and continued throughout the day until midnight on the 20th.
Commenting on the anniversary day sales, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “We are very happy to have achieved Dhs76.91 million (US$21 million) in a 24-hour period. I would like thank everyone for helping us achieve such sales, in particular thanks to our customers for supporting our anniversary day and our staff who do a great job.
“We began introducing a discount offer across a wide range of merchandise on our 20th Anniversary in 2003 and it has become a popular day with travelers, some of whom book their flights in order to shop on that day,” added Mr. McLoughlin.
The statistics for the day highlight the huge volume of sales that passed through the cash points within the 24 hour period.
From a category point of view, Perfumes was the highest selling category with over 58,000 bottles sold amounting to Dhs20.5 million (US$5.6 million) while Watches & Clocks came in second place with sales of Dhs17.8 million (US$4.9 million). Cosmetics came in at third place, category wise, with sales of Dhs7 million (US$1.9 million).
Other notable increases were seen in Electronics, which rose by 23% to Dhs4.5 million (US$ 1.2 million), Confectionery, which rose by 37% representing 134,000 units sold amounting to Dhs3.2 million (US$889, 000), and Delicatessen rose by 17% to Dhs1.5 million (US$425,000).
In readiness for the opening of Concourse A in January, Dubai Duty Free has recruited 1,053 new staff so far this year and will end the year with around 5,200 employees in total. Of the original 100 staff recruited in 1983, 46 remain in active service.
