Sharjah hosts the Sharjah Biennial once in every two years is one of the Gulf’s premier modern art show which was started in 1993. In 1998, Sharjah was named the UNESCO cultural capital of the Arab world. Art Dubai, one of Middle East’s biggest art shows, displayed 70 galleries from 30 countries this year including works from Japan, Mexico and Greece. This is the second year of the event and its sponsors include Abraaj Capital, Madinat Jumeirah and The Financial Times.

The “Arts of Islam: Treasures of Nasser D. Khalili” exhibition, which runs at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi until April 22 this year, has brought in over 30,000 visitors since it opened in late January. “We have been averaging a daily visitor total of around 700 with up to 1,100 a day on weekends,” said the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. It shows 500 pieces from the renowned Khalili collection, some being displayed for the first time anywhere.
